The Country

Where is it?

Costa Rica, which means "Rich Coast" is a small country on the Central American isthmus, bordered by Panama and Nicaragua and nestled between the Pacific and Atlantic oceans.

How's the weather?

Costa Rica has a tropical climate, meaning that it is warm all year. However, because of it's diverse geography, it boasts many "micro-climates" that vary according to altitude, rainfall and topography. In most of the country the year is split into two seasons. The 'dry' season, which we call 'summer' goes generally from December to April, and the 'green' season, or 'winter' from May to November. There is a perfect temperature level for almost anyone! The central valley is known for its eternal spring weather - lovely and warm during the day, nice and cool for sleeping at night. The north pacific coast is hotter, but the heat is tempered by cool ocean breezes. You can let the sun soak into your bones in the southern pacific, or cool off in the mountains where a light jacket is sometimes needed in the evening.

Is it safe?

Costa Rica has enjoyed a stable political democracy for 60 years. It has no standing armed forces, and has often been called the 'Switzerland of the South'. The crime rates are far lower than the USA, Canada and most of Europe, with violent crimes being much less common. More usual are the 'crimes of opportunity'. Just like in any populated area, you need to be cautious and secure your belongings against petty theft. In crowed places like bus stations and shopping malls, keep your money and papers in an inside pouch or pocket. It is best not to leave valuables visible and unattended.

How about the economy?

Costa Rica boasts a lower unemployment rate than either Canada or the USA, and its currency, the colon, has strengthened against the US dollar in 2010. Global economic issues have resulted in a readjustment of property values, and over-inflated prices have started to stabalize in the real estate market. An excellent standard of living can be had by a couple living on Canada Pension or US Social Security.
